On March 6th at 17:00 CET, CIRCULAZE Start-ups Madaster, Concular, and Criaterra joined us to share their circular construction solution.

The construction industry is a key player when it comes to environmental pollution. In fact, the industry is responsible for 50% of the total use of raw materials and 50% of waste in Europe! This is because of large resource and energy consumption and waste production.

From the CIRCULAZE long- and short-list 2022, start-ups Madaster, Concular, and Criaterra joined us to share their Circular Economy solutions in the construction industry.

Concular has developed a digital building resource passport to actively support project developers and property owners in measuring and optimizing circularity, CO2 footprint, and material valu.

What They Do: From stadium seats and bricks, to ceiling lights and wooden beams – Concular is kind of an antiques’ dealer in the construction business, better described as Prop-Tech (property technology). The German start-up wants to increase the amount of materials reused in the construction business, which is currently at an exiguous one per cent in the country. The team of architects, software engineers, and sustainability experts developed a digital building resource passport to actively support project developers and property owners in measuring and optimizing circularity, CO2 footprint, and material value over the building’s entire life cycle. And they match supply and demand via algorithm. Even renters benefit and can score bargains on the sales of demolition buildings such as former department stores or soccer stadiums.

CRIATERRA is re-engineering the way construction materials are manufactured and introducing fully regenerative building products.

What They Do: The story of CRIATERRA starts in India, when Founder Adital Ela drank her first cup of Indian chai. After finishing a cup of chai, the local custom is to throw the clay mug on the ground, where it then becomes one with the earth again. Adital took this concept to found CRIATERRA, which is re-engineering the way construction materials are manufactured and introducing fully regenerative building products. The start-up’s goal is to become a leader in developing the most innovative cradle to cradle materials and production methods for construction. They have developed manufacturing technologies which replace the conventional kiln-firing processes and produce fully recyclable, high performance, and practical construction materials.

Madaster’s digital platform registers materials used in new buildings and puts a “circularity indicator” to it based on numerous scores.

What They Do: My home is my castle? According to Madaster it should read “my home is my resource”. The dutch start-up defines todays’ cities as the urban mines of tomorrow. In a world of continuously growing population, people need more domestic premises. But resources are expensive, supply challenges grow, and – most important – the construction sector consumes enormous resources producing more than half of the world’s waste. Since 2017, work with what you got has been the belief of Madaster. Their digital platform registers materials used in new buildings and puts a “circularity indicator” to it based on numerous scores. It not only systematically records what has been built, but also in what quantities and how much of it can be recycled or reused making existing property to material banks for future constructions.
