Insects first scuttled across the Earth 480 million years ago – that’s more than 477 million years before the earliest humans and long before the emergence of one of the 21st century’s greatest environmental challenges: The broken food chain. Globally, over a third of all food produced is wasted each year. This food waste accounts for 10% of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions, as waste breaks down and releases harmful methane into the atmosphere. In Cambridge, England, start-up Better Origin is harnessing the power of insects to fix this massive problem by going back to nature, where nothing is wasted and is instead eaten by insects. Better Origin’s automated insect mini-farms unite black soldier flies and AI to not only safely dispose of food waste, but in turn, to transform the larvae inside into high-quality animal feed, reducing the need for soy production and preventing deforestation. What’s more, is the entire local food chain can take place inside a mini-farm the size of a shipping container! The start-up is already well on the way to bringing their circular animal feed solutions to the masses, and, in 2021, signed a deal with British supermarket giant Morrisons to feed chickens on their egg farms.
What They Say: “Better Origin wants to fix the broken food chain with the help of nature’s best up cyclers – insects. Through partnerships with farms and food companies, we are converting food waste into insect feed.”

Almost every city on this planet is dominated by one material: concrete. This ubiquitous building material is chosen for being strong, durable, temperature and water-resistant, and easy to mould. However, the popularity means that the production of concrete is also responsible for 8% of total global CO2 emissions – that’s more than any other country besides the U.S. and China! In fact, scientists say that sand and gravel are being extracted faster than they can be replaced, making a new concrete alternative desperately needed to close the concrete loop. Enter C2CA Technology, the Dutch start-up on a mission to upcycle end-of-life concrete into new building materials, therefore reducing emissions, preventing rubble from going to the landfill and preserving scarce natural resources. Their journey began in 2016 when Delft University of Technology and private company GBN joined forces as a spin-off from a European research project. This year they hit a huge milestone as their demo line became fully operational, processing 1,000 tons of waste concrete. So the next time you’re passing a building site in the city, those brand new walls might just be made from an old demolished one.
What They Say: “We aim to mitigate the 8% of global CO2 emissions coming from cement production, by upcycling waste concrete into drop-in substitutes to aggregate, sand, and cement. The vision is to produce circular concrete without primary raw materials.”

Each second 9,023 smartphones are tossed in the trash, and, of the 100 billion tonnes of clothing manufactured each year, 92 million end up in landfills. The harsh reality is that many of these items are in perfect working condition and someone else would happily use them. Most people are aware that buying second-hand over new is far better for not only the environment, but also their pockets. In fact, when surveyed, nearly three fourths of millennials and Gen Z, said they would snap up these wallet and planet-friendly options if it was easier than trawling multiple platforms and inputting countless different combinations of keywords and filters. Enter Faircado’s browser extension, which does all this legwork for you. The AI-powered extension scours a database of more than 10 million products from 70 different trustworthy partners to deliver accurate alternatives to that new item users are searching for. And the best thing? It can be up to 90% cheaper! Founded just two years ago, the Berlin-based start-up has already made a name for itself in the circular economy industry after onboarding e-commerce giants eBay, Back Market, and Vestiaire Collective. And they’re not resting easy yet! Next in their sights is launching an app to make second-hand shopping even easier.
What They Say: “There is no sustainability without circularity. Faircado’s mission is to turn e-commerce into re-commerce for good by making second-hand everyone’s first choice.”

While the majority of us are trying to reduce our food waste at home in our kitchens by meal-planning or finding creative ways to use vegetables near the expiry date, Europe’s biggest grocery stores are also working on reducing their food waste – just on a much larger scale. Shockingly, grocery retailers typically throw away 15% of their fresh produce. In 2021, two Berlin-based AI researchers founded Freshflow: software powered by novel artificial intelligence helping retailers maintain a just-in-time supply chain for fresh food. It tells retailers how much of each type of produce they need to ensure that as little as possible is wasted. The algorithm takes into account a huge range of factors such as weather, holidays, seasonality, and shelf-life, making predictions far more accurate than any human could give. And just as it saves us money to make stock out of our veggie peelings, it saves food businesses money too – albeit on a slightly different scale. Food waste costs the industry an enormous $1.2 trillion a year in losses, but when using Freshflow, some retailers have seen a reduction of food waste by 25% while increasing their revenue. And, for the customers these savings mean more fresh food, often at lower prices. It’s a win-win-win situation for food retailers, customers, and the planet.
What They Say: “Freshflow’s mission is to assist food retailers in reducing shrinkage and improving their margins through AI-powered automated ordering. However, our vision extends beyond that. Freshflow aims to significantly reduce food waste by building an intelligent food supply chain.”

Water is the most precious resource for all life forms on the planet, but it is also a universal solvent, which means that other toxic substances are easily able to dissolve into it. Therefore, any chemicals that end up in the water result in polluted water, which is dangerous to the environment and humans. Oxyle is on a mission to stop water pollution at the source, and prevent toxic micropollutants from entering our bodies of water. To this effect, the Swiss start-up has crafted a novel wastewater treatment: a fully-automated nanocatalyst that destroys all micropollutants in real-time. Their sustainable technology can be tailored to the sector it is being used in, from PPCPs in pharmaceuticals to pesticides in food production, and more. Multi-targeted solutions like Oxyle’s are vital to the cleaning of our global waterways as removing all of the complex types of water pollutants in different ways is a tricky business. 2023 has been a remarkable year for the small team, and the ambitious water-cleaning superheroes are only just getting started. In October, they won the 2023 Public Value Award for Start-Ups and were named as a shining example of how innovation can advance our common good. That really says it all.
What They Say: “Oxyle’s technology will completely destroy organic micropollutants, once and for all.”

Across the world recycling rates are improving, but still only 9% of plastic waste is recycled each year. One of the biggest barriers recycling plants face is separating the huge variety of materials which end up in our trash. Recycleye’s AI-powered trash-sorting robots have Recycleye Vision, which is the London start-up’s flagship technology and functions exactly like a human eye to tell different products apart. In fact, the robots are more consistently accurate than humans, because they’re more reliable, more cost-effective, and can work 24/7. If human-like robot vision sounds like a very futuristic invention, then the future is now. With 21 robots already installed in sites across Europe, Recycleye is successfully reducing waste in the present. Earlier this year they were named as one of the “100 ways to fix the future” on Norrsken’s Impact 100. And let’s not forget that at the end of 2022, the start-up was recognized at the UK’s National Recycling Awards for Robotic Equipment Innovation. Quite an impressive resume! The ability to cheaply and easily sort waste using robots is transforming the recycling landscape, allowing materials that were previously thought unrecyclable to become part of the
circular economy. With Recycleye’s innovation that lacklustre 9% of plastic waste recycled per year is sure to increase.
What They Say: “Recycling starts with the sorting of materials. But if the cost of sorting those materials is higher than the value of the materials themselves, the economics don’t stack up. We believe that waste doesn’t exist, just materials in the wrong place, so by creating innovative sorting technology that lowers the costs of sorting waste, we’re making materials recovery more economic and a better deal for waste management companies and the planet.”

Refurbed’s story began with a problem: Founder Peter purchased an iPhone from a used goods website only for it to quickly break down with no warranty. Also bothering him was the growing issue of electronic waste. Electronic devices are not only harmful to the environment during production, emitting massive CO2 emissions and depleting precious resources, but also in their afterlives. Peter’s experience underscored the importance of sustainable alternatives and led to the founding of Refurbed, a platform for high-quality, renewed products with uniform quality, safety, and guarantees. Now a rapidly growing marketplace for renewed products in German-speaking countries, a remarkable vision is coming to life. At Refurbed, products are up to 40% cheaper and more sustainable than their brand-new counterparts, having undergone up to 40 meticulous refurbishing steps to look and function like new. Shoppers enjoy the triple advantage of sustainability (up to 70% less CO2 emissions), cost savings (up to 40% compared to new purchases), and a 30-day return policy, all while supporting tree-planting initiatives to further reduce the environmental impact. Shoppers choose Refurbed to save money, shop sustainably, and join the mission to make the world a greener place, one device at a time.

Introducing ROSI Solar, the French start-up leading the charge towards a greener energy future. As the European Union strives for a bold 45% renewable energy target by 2030, the production of solar panels is set to surge in the coming years. While this growth is promising, we must not turn a blind eye to its environmental repercussions. Take photovoltaic (PV) modules, for instance; they dutifully generate electricity from sunlight for 20-25 years, but what about the emissions and wasted material during the production of solar panels, and what becomes of them when they reach their lifespan’s end? This is where ROSI Solar steps in. Their pioneering technologies rejuvenate discarded materials, ensuring precise material separation without the need for harsh chemicals. This not only fosters eco-friendly recycling but also drives remarkable cost-efficiency. Their commitment to environmentally friendly, cost-effective recycling is setting the stage for a more sustainable tomorrow in a world where renewable energy is paramount. Au revoir waste!

There aren’t many companies whose names perfectly sum up what they do, but Shit2Power is one of these few. They are transforming the wastewater that ends up at small sewage plants into a local energy source or hydrogen. Globally, only 20% of wastewater is treated and recirculated, but as our population grows and droughts worsen amid climate change, we need the other 80% to be part of this cycle. The primary reason for this is cost: treating wastewater typically costs a lot, as it is incredibly energy-demanding. However, Shit2Power has proven that it doesn’t have to be, because sewage contains more than three times the amount of energy needed to process it. Although sewage sludge is not a particularly beautiful energy source, the Berlin start-up knows it as a valuable resource in the water treatment cycle. Produced as a toxic byproduct in the treatment process, sewage sludge can be broken down and converted into an energy-rich synthesis gas. Currently, 9,000 German sewage treatment plants not only waste sewage sludge, but actually pay 500 million euros per year to dispose of it. And with it, they throw away 460,000 MWh of green energy that could be used elsewhere. Shit2Power’s container solution is a win-win-win product for wastewater; saving money, generating climate-neutral energy, and removing the harmful wastewater sludge. Who knew that sewage could have so much potential!
What They Say: “SHIT2POWER turns wastewater treatment plants into power plants. Like that we can create decentralized systems and keep fresh water in the cycle.”

The benefits of taking public transport over driving alone are no secret: carbon emissions are reduced by 45%, local air quality improves, unnecessary noise is cut, and traffic on the roads is greatly reduced. Unfortunately, there are many areas with impractical or non-existent transportation networks. In some cases, on-demand public transport works to plug these gaps and can be a lifeline to those who live there. But, even when such options exist, they rarely work efficiently. Enter, The Routing Company, whose founders have developed a suite of technology to help transportation providers run useful and cost-effective on-demand services. Founded in 2018, The Routing Company’s algorithms are based on five years of MIT research, and their core technology has been hailed by newsbrand CNN as “a striking example of the potential around ride sharing.” Solutions are tailored from a raft of innovative products in order to meet the requirements of any business which moves people around; be it paratransit or university. Yet, for the transport users, solutions are easy to use. The transatlantic start-up’s Ride Pingo app surfaces all available modes of transport in one app, making public transport the simplest yet. It has also already been put into use across the US and in Europe, improving public transport across the globe.
What They Say: “Co-founders Alex and Menno developed a passion for the engineering and mathematical challenge of dynamic on-demand public transportation. Once Alex and Menno realized what they had created, they decided to bring their solution to the world. They brought ridesharing experts and transit leaders on board to help take The Routing Company from an idea to a critical solution to tackle underutilization of shared transport and by doing so contribute to the goals of the circular economy.”
